The Casino Next Door

Inside a one-story building on the edge of a strip mall in Central Florida, Joy Baker calculates the sum total of her morning bets. It’s almost noon, and she’s down $5. Not bad. Her husband, Tony, sits a few feet away. “This is the most fun we’ve had in 20 years,” says Joy, who is 78 and retired. “At our age, we can’t hike. You can’t pay him to go to the movies. This gives us a reason to get up in the morning.”

Tony concurs. “We enjoy this,” he says. “We will be very bitter if the politicians take this away from us. I will take it personally.”

It’s a Wednesday morning in mid-March, and the Bakers are sitting inside Jacks, a new type of neighborhood business that is flourishing in shopping malls throughout Florida—and across America. Jacks bills itself as a “Business Center and Internet Cafe,” but it looks more like a pop-up casino.

Jacks is about the size of a neighborhood deli. There is a bar next door and a convenience store around the corner. Inside, jumbo playing cards decorate the walls. The room is filled with about 30 desktop computers. Here and there, men and women sit in office chairs and tap at the computers. They are playing “sweepstakes” games that mimic the look and feel of traditional slot machines. Rows of symbols—cherries, lucky sevens, four-leaf clovers—tumble with every click of the mouse.

John Pate, a 50-year-old wearing a Harley-Davidson T-shirt, says he is wagering the equivalent of 60 cents a spin. “This place is pretty laid-back,” says Pate. “You can come here and get your mind off everything. You’re not going to win the mortgage. You’re not going to lose the mortgage. It’s pretty harmless.”

Local law enforcement disagrees. Jacks is located in the town of Casselberry, in the heart of Seminole County, a former celery-growing region that is now a suburb of nearby Orlando. For the past couple of years, the vice squad of the local sheriff’s department has been investigating Jacks and seven other similar businesses around the county for potentially violating state prohibitions on gambling. The cafe owners contend that what they are offering is not technically gambling but rather a form of “sweepstakes” promotions, which are currently legal under Florida state law. In January, after consulting with the sheriff’s department, the five members of the local Board of County Commissioners passed an ordinance designed to shut down the mini-casinos.

The legal fight did not end there. As the commissioners soon learned, along with local officials throughout the U.S., getting rid of Internet sweepstakes cafes is not easy. Shortly after passing the ordinance, the commissioners were hit with multiple civil lawsuits filed in federal court. An attorney representing a chain of sweepstakes cafes headquartered in St. Augustine filed a 49-page complaint alleging, among other things, that the ordinance unfairly restricted the cafes’ First Amendment rights to free speech. A lawyer working for a sweepstakes software company in New Jersey filed a 20-page complaint alleging that the commissioners had violated the commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution.

More than two months later, Seminole County awaits a court ruling. In the meantime, the sweepstakes cafes remain open.

The fight over the legality of the pop-up casinos in Seminole County is part of a broader battle that has been fought for six years in counties across the nation from North Carolina to Texas to Massachusetts. Along the way, cops have raided numerous sweepstakes cafes, confiscated computers, and seized safes full of cash. In September, cops in Virginia Beach, Va., raided a dozen game rooms and confiscated more than 400 computers. In March, police in West Valley City, Utah, shut down two sweepstakes cafes, detained 67 people, and seized 80 computers. Lawmakers in North Carolina passed legislation last year outlawing the business model. In February, Virginia did the same. 2002 Ford Explorer service engine soon light blinks occasionally to 60 mph?

I have a V6 Ford Explorer. I have it maybe a month ago. This a hard winter here in Michigan, and while going down the highway I noticed the car around 60 mph acting strangely. I thought it was just AWD on and off. About 10 minutes later, when I hit 60 mph or so, the service engine soon light comes on, the flash 10 times and shut down. When came to blink I thought I had a misfire, but then fired again. I realized that I would do this, basically, every time I broke the barrier 60 mph. When I reached my destination, I parked to rev the engine to see if anything happened, picked up as normal, all the way to 4500rpm before the limiter speed kicks in. The light is not lit, the engine ran smoothly, I have tried several times with the same result. Does anyone know what's going on? In addition, I have the intention of taking it to advance auto to the scan the computer with his OBDII reader.

Carnegie-Mellon and U-Mich are GREAT if you are studying emergent systems, machine intelligence etc.

Rutgers University might be the better choice if you wanted to do practical database theory and work.

Princeton U, also has an excellent program in many theoretical areas, Machine Intelligence, Biological Computing, Cryptography, etc.

NYU, has a diverse culture and like CMU fosters the idea of interdisciplinary studies, so advanced human/machine interface work, etc is what they have to offer.

Maybe I’m biased in that I have friends or have had some interaction with these universities over the years, but they area all good, you also need to be VERY realistic about your price point, but computer science is generally a career where you make back your educational expenses within a few years.

take out this sentence completely….employers don’t want to hear that you are using them to advance your career !!!! Your second paragraph should mention something about how you will be starting to study nursing, and how the medical field has been a lifelong passion and dream or something like that. Keep it short.

Also, what questions are they going to have…are you a question answerer????

Where can I get a Computer and Electronics Engineering Technology Degree?

The actual degree is called Associates of Applied Science in Computer and Electronics Engineering Technology. The only place I know that offers it is ITT Tech. Although I heard that employers often look down on ITT Tech, plus it’s too expensive.

I would say to focus on your 2 year degree first. It will be a basic associates degree that you will be able to transfer into a 4 year school. When I first start college I wanted to be a CAD draftsman. Boy was I wrong. I worked in that job for 6 months and hated it. It was boring.

Working in the IT sector will allow you to work with computers and sometimes AV type stuff but like I said…focus on the basics now.

I was on facebook and I was uploading photos one of my records before before I was looking for a girl from one of my friends photos on your profile, but I do not press any buttons download or none, then when I went to my brose desktop images for my own album, alll your facebook profile pictures were on my computer instead of my photos! (Im not even friends of this shlt weird girl and this is happening!) then canceled and tried again and everything returned to normal all my pictures and other things that the file of all your profile pictures facebook on my desk is not where epilogues.
